What’s your reason for wanting success in MLM, do you know? What’s driving you? Time freedom? Travel? “Toys”? I believe that if you want to guarantee your success in MLM, your “why” needs to go even deeper. (Video: Visiting the pink beaches of Bermuda was a dream that came true. Yet world travel is not my big “why”…)
Why do some people have success in MLM and others don’t? In a recent blog post I talked about how those that achieve success in MLM have mastered two things: Skill sets and mindset.
But let’s dig even deeper: How is it that some people acquire the skill sets and mindset in the first place while others don’t? Why do some individuals make it in spite of tremendous obstacles while others seem completely unable to rise above their circumstances?
Success In MLM: The Determining Factor
As someone who has built a team of hundreds of consultants over the last couple of years and who has seen a lot of people come and go in this industry, I’m convinced that there really is only one factor that determines whether a person is going to see success in MLM.
It’s not their talent. It’s not their experience. It’s not whether they have a lot of money to invest into their business or not. It’s not even a question of intellect.
The way I see it, you’ll find only two types of people in this industry.
1. The ones that hope.
2. The ones that must.
The First Group: Those That Hope.
Those that “hope”, hope they’ll have success in MLM. They hope they’ll make a lot of money. They hope the business will work for them.

Their “hoping” is often accompanied by a lot of “trying”.
You usually also see this reflected in how they express themselves. They’ll use verbiage like “If I make it…” or “If I have success in MLM…”
They are the same people that post comments on the Facebook pages of top producers (where a lot of people see it, including their own prospects), referring to themselves as a “newbie” and telling this same top producer how much they look up to them and hope (there is that word again) that they, too, will soon have success in MLM.
They’ll throw some ads out there to see if they stick. If they don’t get immediate results, they conclude that it “didn’t work”.
Then they “try” a new business opportunity “hoping” that that one will “work”… But every time the hoping and trying eventually leads to “giving up”. Because, of course, there’s no commitment in “hoping” and “trying”.
The Second Group: Those That Must.
The second group of people have an inner drive, a hunger for accomplishment that demolishes every obstacle in their path. They have a big, big “why” – a why beyond the mere material.
For them, success in MLM is not about the nice new house they want to buy or the travels they want to take. Not exclusively. Often you almost get the feeling that these people are on a mission. Like they have a purpose beyond themselves.

What they may lack in marketing funds, know-how or experience, these individuals make up for in raw energy, focus, passion and an unparalleled readiness to make sacrifices for their dreams. They don’t “hope” the business will work for them – they MAKE it work.
That’s why, in the end, those that “MUST” always achieve success in MLM.
Even if they don’t know much about marketing at the outset. Even if they’re working their business around a full-time job. Because skills can be learned and time can be carved out.
But when the challenges come – when you mess up, when you fall flat on your face – then, the only way you are going to have the patience and the willingness to continue to learn and to practice until you get it RIGHT, is if you have that fire in your belly to succeed.
Success In MLM Really Is Yours For The Taking…
If you want it bad enough, that is.
I recently read “The Millionaire Messenger” by Brendan Bruchard, a truly life changing book that has helped me define my life purpose with crystal clarity in the wake of some recent challenges.

Although not on the topic of how to achieve success in MLM, Brendan discusses in the book how highly accomplished people who train, teach, inspire and lead others – the “millionaire messengers” as he calls them – are driven by sense of obligation of sorts.
An obligation to give back, to be all they were meant to be, to inspire others to live their lives to the fullest.
As I was reading the book, I thought about my own journey and how hard I’ve worked over the years to get to where I am today. And I can promise you that it hasn’t been “just” for the purpose of buying a house, and not “just” to retire my husband from the job that was giving him backaches…
Rather, it’s been because I’ve always known in my heart – ever since I was a little girl – that my purpose is to lead and to serve. (My life verse is Luke 12:48, “To whom much has been given, much is expected”.)
Brendan Bruchard says it perfectly, I think, when he refers to it as a “sense of duty” or “an obligation”. But it’s a duty that’s filled with joy every step of the way because you know you’re having a positive impact on others and fulfilling your life’s purpose.
Which Group Do You Fall Into – “Hope” Or “Must”?
Are you determined to make an impact? Do you know your why – beyond the mere material? What’s the reason you’re working so hard and making all these sacrifices to build your home business?
If you’re not sure, then it’s probably time to do some soul searching…
If you do know your why with crystal clarity – and as long as your why is big enough – you can know with confidence that it’s only a matter of time before you, too, will achieve success in MLM. So be encouraged!

Wow another great post Lena!
What also stopped me from hoping to being a person of “must”
is personal development. It has completely changed my mindset.
That’s so great to hear, Nathaniel! Appreciate the comment!
I’m not yet into MLM but I love your article. So true there must be a big “emotional why?” in order to succeed in everything.
Appreciate the feedback, Michael! Have a great weekend.
Spot on Lena! Your life cannot follow its true path until you become crystal clear as to what the destination will be!
Well put, Michelle!
Thanks Lena well timed I needed to hear this today geting the mind set right will drive me forward.
Excellent post, to succeed in MLM it is very important to have a ‘why’ and keep that as a focus as the path to success is not straight, it has many twists and turns and it is only by keeping a focus on your’why’ that you will keep going. It is very easy for people to give up when things don’t go to plan but those who see these setbacks as an incentive to try again are the people who will succeed. MLM is a longhaul process as are all business opportunities and this is the excitement of it as we look at what is working and what isn’t and continually plan new approaches and the people we meet along the way can be an added bonus to the journey. The only place success comes before work is in the dictionary and we need to remember that hard work builds our character and gives us a sense of accomplishment.
Right on, Elaine! Couldn’t agree more!
When I was 9 years old I had a picture of how I saw my future. And it happened that way, like magic. Now i have a family of 4 children, 12 grandchildren and many great grandchildren. My husband died years ago, am now 81, am not as smart as I used to be. Have someone living in my house I dont get along with. Life is not much fun anymore.
Hang in there, Dag!
This is very good food for thought. For me, it explains the passion I have had for a decade or so and the fact that I have never given up or lost faith in MLM. I have a very strong need to give back as well as achieving financial security and most certainly feel that fire in my belly. I am in the right place at the right time, where I have blog posts like this one on a regular basis and feel blessed to have clicked on a Facebook ad from you Lena! Your guidance is God sent!
Thanks for the kind comment, Peter. Yes, you are a fighter, for sure!
Hello Lena,
I enjoyed this post. I don’t think of myself as a “hope” person, but I do believe I have a perfectionist personality which serves to hold me back just the same. A combination of a “must” personality along with a need for speed seems to be a great combination for a lot of successful people. Another way of saying this is “have no fear of failing forward.” A consistent reminder of what is needed to succeed in any endeavor is always welcome. Thank you for recommending the The Millionaire Messenger book by Brendan Bruchard. I found a free chapter on his website. I now plan to read this book in full. I’ve read your “My Success Blueprint” and find your ability to make a potentially complex subject more simple. Thank you.
Think you hit the nail on the head there, Eric! And yes, get Brendan’s book – it’s fantastic!
It’s time to start falling up! Not down. Thanks for the inspiration.
Thank you, Lena, for sharing your experiences with us. I need to get started on a new path, and soon! I appreciate your advice- words of wisdom! May God continue to bless you!!!
I’ll take that blessing. ;) Thanks, Deborah!
You are welcome, Dave! Appreciate the comment!
