Should You Tell Your Friends & Family That You’ve Started An MLM Business Opportunity?

Well, what do you think – should you tell your friends, family, neighbors, and relatives that you’ve started a brand new MLM business opportunity?

Should you throw a big, loud party, letting everyone know you are “open for business”? Should you mail out samples to uncle Joe and cousin Sally, and share your “life-changing products” with everyone with a pulse?

Should you rant and rave to all your friends about how your new ground breaking MLM business opportunity could be their ticket out of debt…their key to a lavish lifestyle, maybe even one that includes a company sponsored BMW?!

It’s this hot topic that I want to discuss in today’s post.

Let Me Start Out By Sharing What I Did When I Got Started With My First MLM Business Opportunity…

I was a go-getter if there ever was one. So when upline said to tell everyone I knew about my new MLM business opportunity, I went for it like there was no tomorrow.

I made my list and checked it twice, and sent out products samples to unsuspecting uncles and aunts, friends at church…even some of my hubby’s soccer buddies. (He wasn’t too happy about that.)

Then I waited with bated breath.

And waited… My hair started to turn grey (okay – almost.)

Strangely enough, I never heard back from anyone. No one emailed or called to express their appreciation for the products.

Products that I had paid for. That I had bought postage and envelopes for. That I had taken the time to package and send out.

And no one contacted me to thank me for telling them about my ground breaking MLM business opportunity.

No… It was mysteriously silent on the receiver’s end of the samples. Which made me wonder if maybe something had happened to my letters and samples…

Could they have gotten lost in the mail? How else could the lack of response be explained?

But then, a couple of the envelopes came in return along with a polite note from two different friends, explaining that my MLM business opportunity was “not for them” – or something to that effect.

And then I knew for a fact that the samples hadn’t ended up in the pockets of a crooked mail carrier or somewhere else where they didn’t belong.

Man. That was a rude awakening.

I just didn’t get it.

How could they not see what I saw? How could they not catch my vision? A vision for better health, more wealth, a greater impact on the world around you… All this, and a lot more, they would get with my MLM business opportunity!

Today, of course, I understand that it’s not that anyone wanted to hurt my feelings – they simply weren’t interested.

And why should I have a reason to believe that they would be interested anyway?

Had any of them – my aunts, uncles, friends from church, hubby’s soccer buddies etc. – at any time expressed a desire to start an MLM business opportunity?

Uhum…no.

Had they requested that I send them product samples?

Again, the answer was no.

And that’s when it dawned on me: It wasn’t them…it was me. I was marketing my MLM business opportunity to the WRONG people.

All these people that I’d sent my products to – they were NOT in my target market.

So of course they were’t going to call me and thank me for showing them my products or my MLM business opportunity! They hadn’t asked to see it! (Duh.)

If I felt weird and embarrassed, I can only imagine how THEY must have felt…

So…to answer the question I asked earlier: Personally, I do not recommend you tell everyone you know that you’ve started an MLM business opportunity. Not unless you’re ready to deal with a lot of rejection and negativity.

“Oh, so you’re gonna get rich, are you, working from home? Suuuuure.”

“What makes you think you’re gonna make it this time? You already tried two other MLMs that didn’t work.”

“Yeah, keep dreaming. Why don’t you just go get a REAL job?”

Here’s What I Recommend You Do Instead…

Keep your lips zipped. Don’t tell anyone you know about your new MLM business opportunity. Not yet.

Once you start making money, sure, tell the whole world! In fact, once you start making money, your friends and relatives are gonna be coming to you, wanting to know what you’re doing! (Happened to me more than once.)

But not now.

Rather, take your MLM business opportunity online where there are thousands upon thousands of people all over the world who are already looking for what you have to offer.

People just like you, who DO have the vision and who DO see what you see. People who want to join your MLM business opportunity.

People who aren’t going to make you feel awkward for approaching them.

Even if they did, it wouldn’t matter ’cause they’re just strangers anyway! And they’ll remain strangers and you’ll never have to deal with them personally – unless they sign up with you in your MLM business opportunity!

(Man, you gotta love the Internet.)

You just continue to put your products and your MLM business opportunity out there in front of people online. In front of the RIGHT people. Do this enough and you will get results.

Remember, when you do marketing right, you’re simply responding to needs. You’re simply giving people exactly what they want.

Does it work? Does it truly and unequivocally work?

Heck, how do you think I built my MLM business opportunity with a downline in over 20 countries on five continents?

My friend, I love you, but if you answered “by mailing out product samples”, you get a big fat “F”…

    Hi Lena,

Your blogs always get me thinking which I believe is a good thing. Most of the things you talked about, I agree totally. However this particular one is quit hard to say whether I agree or not.

If someone who is totally new to network marketing, don’t even know where to start, warm market is the only place that they know. More important, very rare, an absolute newbie would be brave enough to approach cold market, putting themselves in front of an audience that they don’t know at all.

Just as what you replied in the other post, there are many ways to do things, and sometimes all of them can also be the best ways depends on people’s situations. Each person just has to choose what they think is the best for them.

    • Lena Bjorna says:

Great feedback, Regina! Absolutely – there is more than one way to skin a cat, for sure. But I’m not so sure that it takes more bravery to approach a cold market than your warm market… I think that promoting to your warm market can often be the hardest thing, because those people you’re going to have to see again and again…strangers on the other hand, who reject you, well, at least you don’t have to face them again!

I personally recommend learning to market online so that you can get your offer in front of interested people who are LOOKING for what you have. Getting leads and customers that way can happen VERY quickly, and you actually eliminate all rejection this way because you are marketing to your target market.

Then you also don’t risk seeing relationships with friends and family turning “awkward” as a result of your constantly “introducing” your business to them – or perhaps as a result of a friend or family member getting started in your downline but then dropping out…which can definitely create some tension in the relationship! Best to keep personal life and business separate IMO. ;)

This is a great blog! I did exactly that originally and it got me nowhere except some very sceptical friends and relations. I also tried bought internet leads from a supplier but that dropped off a cliff a couple of years ago and lost me a lot of money.

I now plan to follow your advise as it makes so much sense to me but need to put a very clear 90 day Plan (with big P) in place before I begin as I can’t afford to go through all the emotional and financial cost again.

    Thanks, Lena!

In my experience, they just say “call me when you are making money.” Time to move on.

Great post lena but you know what I’m not sure… I do talk to my warm market. Let’s say that Ray Higdon change my mind with this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYZIZpPM7Fs

Even Mike Dillard said that If you don’t care whether they will join or not you can talk to your warm market.

    • Lena Bjorna says:

Appreciate the comment, Moises! Yes, I know Ray disagrees, and I know what Mike said. :) Ray is my upline and yet we take completely different sides on this one, which I actually think is kind of cool. Mike was one of my first mentors, and I respect him a lot.

As another mentor of mine said, “there’s a million ways to a million dollars”… If you like to talk to your warm market, then that’s cool. I just don’t…I’m too much of an “internet network marketer” – I like the ease of systems and leverage online, and the concept of being able to reach 100 interested, qualified people in cyberspace in the same amount of time it would take me to find one interested, qualified person in my warm market.

For a lot of people warm marketing involves a lot of rejection, and not everyone handles that well… I think it’s good they can know that there is an option – that they don’t “have to” talk to their warm market if they don’t want to.

Definitely more than one way to skin a cat… When I blog, though, I like to take a strong stance for whatever point of view that I hold, because that’s what gets people engaged in your posts, lol. It doesn’t mean I’m all black and white in everything I believe – there are exceptions to every rule.

I think you’re awesome, Moises, really mean that! Have an awesome Friday!

        Lena
I dont know why your blog doesn’t notify me about your reply. Anyways I think we can agree on that. There are many ways to build it and it will depend on the people and their mindset. Thank you so much for your feedback.

Thank you or your perspective and thoughtful responses Lena!
