Can You Recruit People For Your MLM Online Business Via Email??? (What Do You Think?)

If you’re looking for real, lasting results in your MLM online business, I can help. Be sure to watch this 80 seconds video, and turn on your speakers… Then opt in for more details on “Her Success Blueprint” toward the bottom of this post.

When I was just starting out doing MLM online and my sales funnel wasn’t very automated yet, I, like most other new network marketers, spent a substantial amount of time communicating with leads one on one.

I was, however, doing it all wrong. What I’m going to share with you next may make you laugh – or, if you’ve ever made any of these mistakes yourself, you may shake your head in recognition!

The Dos And Don’ts Of Recruiting For Your MLM Online

As a new marketer, as I started becoming more and more visible online, especially on the social networks, my subscriber list naturally grew. And so did the content of my email inbox.

Increasingly more prospects (many of whom weren’t even leads yet) started emailing me asking questions.

Now, it’s pretty cool when that happens… When people start showing interest in working with you, that’s a surefire sign that you are doing something right.

If you’re building your MLM online and you’re experiencing this right now, do a little victory dance because that means you’re on the right track.

You just need to know how to monetize all the attention. I didn’t…

Boy, did I have it backwards…

You see, a lot of the people emailing me were simply asking for advice – they weren’t even pretending to be interested in joining me. They just wanted free help.

And the nice, caring, helpful gal that I was (I still am…just wiser now :) I responded to each and every inquiry with gusto. I mean, I spent hours, literally, every day replying to all the emails.

Now why in the world would I do that?

For one, I had a misconstrued sense of duty. I thought it would be “not nice” to ignore any emails. I didn’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings.

Second, I was under the illusion that engaging in communication with my leads via email, answering their questions and pointing them to the next step, was going to make them take action and join me. (Ha-ha.)

After weeks of trying to “prospect” this way via email, I came to the realization that what I was doing wasn’t working. Because none of the people writing me with questions ever ended up getting started!

Interesting, isn’t it? Turned out they were only curious, not serious.

Here’s what I did next…

First of all, I made sure that the email account my leads responded to was one that I used only for my business and exclusively for the purpose of communicating with prospects.

What I did was I created a brand new email account over at google.com…or a “Gmail” as it is called.

The reason you’ll want to use Gmail rather than say yahoo or hotmail, is because Gmail allows you to see the first sentence in the message that you receive without even having to open the email.

This way you can, with a glance, get an idea of its content, something which is going to save you a ton of time as your subscriber list continues to grow.

Many messages you’ll be able to delete without even having to open them. Like the ones starting with a sentence like “You @&**%#$*! You are a scam artist and your company sucks!”

(If you’re marketing your MLM online, expect to get some of those, too. It goes with the territory.)

When it came to writing prospects back, I changed my strategy completely.

I stepped out of my comfort zone big time. (As you may have guessed by now, the truth was I was scared to get on the phone with people.)

I stopped writing long epistles in response and instead began to reply with these two words: CALL ME. That was it. “Call me!” followed by my phone number.

Guess what happened next?

If you think that my phone started ringing off the hook, you’re mistaken. A few people called, true, and some of them I was actually able to close on the spot. (Turned out I wasn’t as bad on the phone as I’d thought!)

On the phone, you see, I was able to demonstrate posture and leadership in a way I was not able to when trying to recruit via email.

But the vast, vast majority of the people that emailed me about my MLM online business, did NOT take me up on the offer to talk on the phone.

Are you surprised? I’m not. Not today, looking back.

You see, those that aren’t serious aren’t going to pick up the phone and have a real conversation. They’ll waste your time with lengthy email inquires but they won’t get on the phone.

The great thing was that this freed up a lot of my time. No longer did I spend hours every day responding to emails from Curious Georges. And yet, I wasn’t being rude or uncaring by not writing back. I did write my prospects back – but I also called them to task.

I basically said, “show me first that you’re worthy of my time.” I gave them the option, and hey, if they didn’t go for it, it was their problem, not mine. It put the ball back in their court where it belonged.

“Call me” became a powerful qualifier – a real game changer for my business.

Guilt, be gone. Wasted time, be gone. I was back in control, and that was a liberating feeling!

If you want to survive in the world of MLM online, there’s one thing you need to learn how to do.

You’ll need to start creating what one of my mentors calls “barriers of entry”.

As your organization builds and your customer base grows, you are going to have to become increasingly more organized and effective, better and better at creating qualifiers, and more and more careful about how and with whom you spend your time.

You see, what happens when you take your MLM online is that all of a sudden heaps of people now have access to you that didn’t have access to you before.

People across the world who previously didn’t even know you existed, start noticing you, following you, and looking to your for advice.

Of course, that’s a GREAT thing. You want that. You want to reach potential customers quickly and easily. You want prospects to come to you rather than you having to go after them.

But it can become a big Pandoras Box if you let it. If you try to be “nice” and cater to everyone’s needs, giving free advice and coaching to everyone who contacts you, you’ll lose your mind.

You must guard yourself against vampires of your time or you’ll die a slow and painful death of exhaustion.

This may not even require that much extra effort. In my case two simple words in my email replies was all it took to sift the wheat from the chaff: “Call me.” You, too, may want to give this a shot!

This blog post explains the reason why you said you didn’t call your leads on the MLSP Webinar September 26. At first I was puzzled by that but now I get it! Awesome strategy!

Great tip Lena! I would spend hours writing back to people as well. What a waste of time that was. As always – greatly helpful! You are such a good teacher!

Yes, it takes time that allows one to acquire experience, and experience from acquiring knowledge in multiple areas of the marketing arena pretty much turns one into a seasoned professional traveling from point A to point B and beyond. I enjoyed your post here and I’m sure many will benefit as they apply this principle to their daily endeavors.
As usual, thanks for being transparent for helping others :-)

  7. Hi Lena this is a really helpful post. Sorting out the wheat from the chaff is definitely time saving. Thanks for the tip. If someone else with the same name as me has replied with these words it is a pure co-incidence.
I support your work Lena because I know you are genuine and trustworthy.

By the way, I read all your blog entries, which come to me by email, and I like your helpful down-to-earth-but-dream-big approach. I always feel I’m learning something useful to me personally as I start building my online marketing platforms. You have a smart and detail-oriented yet warm persona. After looking at lots of others (mostly men) doing the same or similar things online, I think you’re the best because you’re the mostly believable communicator and you really are giving away seminal information.
    Thank you.

  11. Eric Marlow says:

Another fantastic post. I love the strategic nature of your “call me” approach. A simple but profound qualifier. I notice you are one of the few online network marketers that doesn’t include their phone number next to their end-of-post signature or on your contact page. At least I now know how to get your number. LOL. Please keep these stealthy tips coming.

    • Lena Bjorna says:

HAHA, Eric…no, that would not be the way to get my number. ;) This is a strategy I used when I was relatively new and my approach has changed somewhat since then as my business has grown. These days I have other filters in place that I’m not discussing here as they wouldn’t be relevant to a new marketer. I appreciate the comment! =)

  12. David Price says:

This makes good sense. If you have filters, your offering becomes more valuable in the eyes of others quite apart from the issue of saving you time and energy.

  13. Silla says:

    Hi Lena
Thanks for your blogg post, I read them every day.
    Greetings from Iceland

  14. Pat Thompson says:

Excellent info. Yes it does require stepping outside of your comfort zone. After all this is how we are going to experience personal growth.

    You are a great person

  15. Dan says:

As a “new” marketer, I appreciate your posture, the choice to put the responsibility back on them. Strong!!
