How To Market On Facebook Without @#**% People Off

Terrific video on how social media is taking over the world.

Sadly, a lot of people have no idea how to market on Facebook. They make it all about their products or business opportunity, which is nothing but a turn-off to everyone they come in contact with. The problem is, they’re not connecting…they’re just pitching.

Pitching is a strategy that never works, but it especially doesn’t work on Facebook, because Facebook is a social media platform where people go not to buy but – are you ready for this? – to socialize.

This is also why, when it comes to the question of how to market on Facebook, there are some golden rules we all need to abide by…

How To Market On Facebook With Free Fan Pages.

On your fan page, tell your story and give your fans a chance to get to know you!

First, let’s talk about how to market on Facebook with your fan page.

Did you know that if you’re posting about your products or your business opportunity on your fan page, you’re doing it completely wrong?

Now, I’m not talking about the annoying behavior of posting about your MLM on other people’s pages – that this is a big no-no I hope is obvious…

No, I’m talking about YOUR fan page.

Huh…?

I don’t know if you’re familiar with Attraction Marketing, but if you are, you know that people only buy from those that they know, like and trust.

So, in simple terms, the purpose of your fan page is to get your fans to do just that – know, like and trust you. Because then, they’ll also BUY from you.

On the other hand, if a person lands on your fan page and all they see is your MLM…

If they’re met by photos of your pin or company logo, images of your products, “company success stories”, “before and after” pictures, news about your upcoming convention, etc., etc., etc. – they’re gonna feel like they’re being sold to. And if it’s one thing people hate it’s that: Being sold to.

If you’re doing the above, you’re coming on too strong. I’ve talked about this before…it’s like asking someone to marry you the minute you’ve been introduced.

The formula for how to market on Facebook successfully is to make your fan page about YOU, the leader, rather than about your opportunity or products. Then give great free training that’s going to help your fans whether they’re interested in your MLM or not, and continue to build a relationship with them over time.

The right people will then either 1) End up selling themselves on working with you, or 2) Buy something else from you. ;) (You do have other products you’re marketing than just your MLM products…right?)

And Then There’s Paid Facebook Advertising…

Now, that’s its own can of worms…

The other day I came across a Facebook ad (not the one pictured here but one equally bad). It read, “Find out How I, An Internet Marketing Newbie, Makes Great Progress in Learning How to Make Money Online.”

I almost pulled my hair out.

I certainly salute this “newbie” for taking the plunge and running paid advertising on Facebook without even knowing how to market on Facebook – I mean, at least he’s taking action, right?!

But there are some problems, BIG problems, with his ad…

First of all, no one wants to sign up with a newbie.

I understand that the advertiser is trying to create relatability, but he needs to find a different way to go about it.

He could, for instance say, “Find out how I, a former struggling MLM’er…” or, “Find out how I, a burnt-out bank teller…” or, “…a minimum wage employee…” – whatever happens to be his particular story.

Just don’t use the word “newbie” because that’s not who your prospects want to sign up with!

The second part of the ad is problematic as well. It is way too unspecific. “Makes Great Progress…”? Not too noteworthy, is it…

But what if the ad instead talked about how he “generated 37 free leads in 24 hours”? Or, “signed up 11 new distributors in a week”? Now you’re getting interested…aren’t you? ;)

The difference is that now it’s SPECIFIC. Generalities don’t work in marketing because generalities aren’t compelling. They don’t pull us in. Specifics are where it’s at.

So, the steps for how to market on Facebook without annoying everyone…let’s do a quick recap.

1.) Build relationships rather than “sell”. People go on Facebook NOT to shop but to connect. Your followers want to get to know you.

2.) Lead with value. You’ve got to earn the right to sell to your prospect.

3.) Your story should be tied into everything. Our newbie friend had this part down: He understood that even in his ad he should be telling a story – which is one of the secrets for how to market on Facebook effectively.

4.) Everyone wants to work with someone who can show them how to get results. So present yourself as a Leader. (This was the part our friend didn’t get.)

When it comes to the question of how to market on Facebook, I’ve obviously only touched the tip of the iceberg in this post. To learn much, much more about how to market on Facebook with free social networking, pick up a copy of my brand new mini eBook, “Secret Bag of Facebook Tricks”!

Click HERE for that. (I just posted a revealing video on the page that shows you some of what you’ll find in the book, but it actually gives away a little too much, so not sure how long I’ll leave it up there. Better take action right away if you wanna watch it.)

    Hi Lena,
Thanks for this blog – I think I’ve been doing it all wrong! I was wondering why it is so much easier to get likes and comments on my personal page but near impossible on my ‘fan’ (business) page – I ask questions, offer fantastic promotions, free stuff, the works – but I am still getting nowhere. I know that I am well liked as a person, and my judgement is trusted, people often asking me for advise. I will reevaluate my page now. Thanks again.
