Better than winning an award…

Tuesday, May 24th, 2011

I just returned home from another marketing event with – I’m grateful and honored to say – another sales award.

But what was even better than being presented with an award myself, was to watch some of my downline reps pick up awards of their own.

Members whom I’ve seen face great challenges in the pursuit of their dreams, and who have kept at it, refusing to give up.

And now, to stand it the back of the room and watch them step up on stage with looks of disbelief on their faces as it suddenly hits them that this is it, this is the moment they’ve visualized in their minds so many times…

I’ll never forget when I was presented with my first award a couple of years ago – stepping up on stage was a mountain experience like no other.

Not that there weren’t other mountain tops to be climbed. Not that it was just downhill from that point on…of course not. It was really only the beginning.

But things changed after that moment in time, it really did.

You see, I left the event a different person: I’d proven to myself that I could do it.

From that point on, I worked my business with a very different mindset. And because I was able to truly look at myself as “successful” now, others saw me as successful, too…

That’s why winning that first award was such a big breakthrough for me: When you change, your business changes.

And that’s why I’m so excited for my downline members – Jenni and the rest of the iGlobalPros team, and Helene, Melanie and Jann of iProSynergy…both teams within my team…both being presented with a Master Marketer’s Award at our company conference this weekend in Phoenix.

I’m excited for them not only because they were recognized for their results, but because I know this can be such a big game changer for them, too.

And when the game changes, that’s when you look back at all the sacrifices you made…all the pain…all the struggles.

And you just laugh at it all. Because none of it matters anymore.

Congrats guys and girls…well done! And remember – this is only the beginning!

“Average” or “Memorable” (Which Are You?)

Sunday, February 20th, 2011

The other day I spent time with some friends whom I hadn’t seen in months. We used to be very close, but over the last couple of years our lives have taken us in somewhat different directions.

As I listened to them talk, I couldn’t help but notice how often the phrase, “I WOULD”, kept coming up.

For example (emphasis mine): “I would like to go visit my parents soon”, “I would like to move to a bigger house”, “I would like to take my kids to Disneyland.”

One of them even stated, “Here’s what I would do if I was making $100 000 a year…”

This is when I had my light bulb moment:

I realized that the people I normally associate with – successful, progressive entrepreneurs – don’t speak in terms of “if” or “would.” They speak in terms of “when” and “will”.

They don’t just wish. They DO.

And as I sat there listening to my friends’ conversation, it struck me how powerful language is.

The words we choose matter because they speak volumes about what goes on inside of us. We speak out of the overflow of our hearts, as it were.

The apparently subtle difference between “I will” and “I would” says everything about the mindset of the person uttering the words!

Everyone has ideas. Everyone has dreams. Dreaming is easy. Acting on the dreams…turning dreams into reality…that’s the hard part!

Which of course is why the vast majority of people live their entire life in terms of IF and WOULD. They continue to do what is “safe” and “normal”, seemingly oblivious to the fact that where there is no risk, there is no growth.

Failing to realize that everything they ever wanted in life lies right there outside their comfort zone…

I don’t know what category YOU fall into – “would” or “will”, “if” or “when” – but I want to challenge you right now:

Next time, when at a fork in the road, make the less obvious choice. Choose the rocky road. Be adventurous.

As I said, where there is no risk, there is no growth. And where is no growth, there is also no reward.

Don’t choose “average”. Choose “memorable”. Choose “memorable” because you have one life here on Earth, and it’s up to you to make the most of it.

13 years ago today, Sam and I said “I do”

Monday, January 17th, 2011

Today Sam and I have been married for 13 years. Wow! It seems like it was just yesterday that this handsome young driving instructor showed up at my doorstep…

Yep, that’s how we met: I had just moved to Los Angeles – a city built for cars, I learned quickly – and getting my drivers license became top priority.

Sam was the instructor I hired to teach me…he was just a name I got off of the yellow pages. I, of course, had no idea of the ripple effect that one seemingly small, insignificant decision would create.

That was in November of 1996. Fourteen months later, on January 17, 1998, we were married. We had no money. But we had faith & hope…and we were madly in love.

Interestingly, Sam and I were baptized together just a week before our wedding. And after I had shared my Christian testimony in front of the congregation about how Sam and I met, and how he’d started witnessing to me while we were out driving, the response from the pastor was as follows:

“How about that? Driver’s license, marriage and salvation in the same package!”

The congregation erupted in laughter.

Yes, that’s the story in a nutshell. And today, 13 years later, I have this to say to my wonderful hubby:

Thank you for all that you do. Thank you for letting me live out my dreams. Thank you for standing behind me, believing in me, cheering me on.

I may be the “face” of our business, but one must not forget that behind every successful woman stands a great man. You are that man. I love you heaps.

Internet marketing, faith and “the man with the golden voice”

Saturday, January 8th, 2011

By now I’m sure you’ve heard the story of Ted Williams, the 53 year old homeless man who within 72 hours went from panhandling and living on the streets of Ohio to becoming a media sensation.

A former radio announcer who had lost everything to a drug and alcohol addiction – but now clean and with a new-found faith in God – he had been praying relentlessly that his 90 year old mother would live to see his comeback.

And just the other day, while wandering the streets of Ohio begging for spare change, he was discovered by a reporter. This reporter shot a video of “the Man with the Golden Voice”, a video that soon went viral online and catapulted Ted into the spotlight.

Ted has now been reunited with his mother, whom he hadn’t seen in 20 years (!)…and the job offers are pouring in.

It’s an amazing story… I haven’t been able to get it off my mind since I first heard it earlier this week.

It’s a story that gives you hope. And that’s why I wanted to briefly comment on it here on my blog.

Three things I take away from it:

1. Anything can happen when you just choose to stay positive, prayerful and continue to believe…yes, even in the worst of circumstances.

2. God is a God of second chances: You can never mess up too bad.

3. The Internet is an incredible tool…a youtube video that goes viral can change a person’s life. As a online marketer, you need never doubt that you are in the right place at the right time.

Let 2011 be the year that you make an impact on someone, and use your business as the vehicle to accomplish it…

Here is the famous video.

“What should we do today…visit the Great Wall of China or fly over the North Pole?”

Monday, January 3rd, 2011

The movie,The Bucket List, is a film about two terminally ill men – played by Jack Nicholson & Morgan Freedman – who escape from a cancer ward and head off on a road trip with a wish list of to-dos before they die.

This to-do list is what they call their “bucket list”…a list of things they want to do and experience before they “kick the bucket”.

And the two men do everything on their list: they go skydiving together, drive a Shelby Mustang, fly over the North Pole, ride motorcycles on the Great Wall of China, attend a lion safari in Africa…and much more.

Bucket lists are very different than New Years resolutions. They’re about the real goals and desires of your heart.

Do I keep a bucket list…? You bet!

I have already crossed off many items on my list – such as visiting the cave on the island of Patmos where the apostle John wrote Revelations, taking my mom camel riding around the pyramids of Cairo, Egypt, writing a book as well as several screen plays, speaking on stage…

How about you – do you have a bucket list?

If not, get started!

Not only are the experiences themselves thrilling. But so is the feeling you get whenever you check something off on your list: You did it. You accomplished it.

Whether it’s to witness a solar eclipse, sell your art work, learn to play the tuba, see the 7 wonders of the world, camp under the stars, learn to speak a foreign language…be reconciled with an enstranged family member, ask someone for forgiveness, find a long-lost friend…

…these are the sort of things that add spice to life.

Don’t allow your life to become dull and flavorless. Let 2011 be the year you refocus on those things that truly matter…the things that bring true satisfaction, joy and happiness both to yourself and others!

In other words, those things which – as you are about to kick the bucket – are going to make you look back on your life and SMILE

A $420 lesson in gratitude

Friday, December 17th, 2010

The other day my car was towed. I’d parked it on a street with restricted parking and completely forgot I was supposed to move it before I went to bed that night.

The next morning, hubby – who had just walked out the door to go Christmas shopping – came bursting back in, exclaiming that the car was gone: “Where did you park?”

I thought about it for about half a second, and remembered… On the street with the restricted parking. Ouch. The car had been towed!

To make a long story short, within a few hours we had the car back.

Sam went to go get it, and it cost us a hefty $420. (Ouch again.)

However…and this is my whole point of sharing this with you.

I could have spent the rest of the day (or week) kicking myself over all this…I could have blamed my husband even, (and causing a fight,) however unreasonable that would have been…I could have allowed it to bring me down….to make me angry, bitter, mad at the city of Los Angeles for incorporating such stupid street regulations.

But I chose not to.

I chose to look at it as something good instead. Namely a lesson in gratitude.

First of all, instead of just getting towed, the car COULD HAVE BEEN stolen, and that of course would have been a whole different ball game.

Secondly, I didn’t have to lift a finger to get it back: Sam took care of everything while I got to stay home. Which reminded me how blessed I am to have a husband like him —

It COULD HAVE BEEN me that had to go get the car – after all it was my fault. But Sam’s choice to take care of things for me gave me yet another thing to be thankful for.

Thirdly, IF THIS HAD HAPPENED just 3 years ago, $420 would have been about 25% of our monthly income, and this unforeseen expense would have had much more significant repercussions – such as likely not being able to buy Christmas presents for everyone on our list.

Thankfully, it happened now, not back then.

Those were only three reasons that immediately came to mind as to why I had reason to be thankful in the midst of the calamity.

I think you get the point.

The point is that you choose how you react to everything that transpires around you, in your life.

Our circumstances are just that… Circumstances. We decide how to read them, and react to them.

I believe you can take any “bad” incident and turn it into something good. Yes, I firmly believe that all of us have the ability to do so.

When you lose your hard-earned money or an investment due to an unwise business decision…when your house has been on the market for over a year and absolutely no offers are coming in…when the biggest team builder in your organization jumps ships, taking half your downline with them…when your computer crashes, causing you to lose weeks worth of work.

Those are the types of things I’m talking about.

Am I saying it’s easy? No.

But one thing I know, and I know this from personal experience: We CAN train ourselves to interpret, and react to, our circumstances positively rather than succumb to our natural tendency to do otherwise.

Until, after a while, this new way of thinking and reacting actually becomes our default mechanism.

Recouping a towed car can go from being a nuisance and an unwelcome unnecessary expense to becoming a lesson in gratitude.

If that’s how you choose to look at it.

Have you met…the angels in my downline?

Saturday, November 6th, 2010

The money is great. So is the recognition. And the lifestyle is second to none.

But that’s not what gets me out of bed and into action each and every day.

When I turned on my computer this morning, there was a message from one of my downline members in Norway.

She wrote, “it’s amazing how the pieces of the puzzle are coming together now for me. I feel like I am surrounded by angels. You have lots of angels in your downline…did you know that, Lena?”

Those were her exact words. Followed by a “smiley face”. :)

Well, she put a smile on my face, too.

And inspired me to write this post.

It’s true – I do have a lot of angels on my team. And it makes me proud and happy to see how my members are all supporting one another and working together so that everyone can get quicker results.

First, there is Thomas…

Thomas who is the contact person for my team in Scandinavia, who does team trainings online in Norwegian every week and even conducts monthly workshops at his home.

Here, the members get together in person to learn from Thomas and from one another.

I didn’t ask Thomas to do all this for my team. He offered.

Now, that’s a real angel!

And he isn’t the only one.

There’s also Helene. Helene is a real “techie”, and when my members needed to know how to use a particular software to create website templates, she – on her own initiative – created a video tutorial for everyone, which showed them the exact steps.

This was not just for Helene’s own downline but for my downline, too. And there is of course no financial reward for her in assisting my members.

Yet she didn’t let that stop her from helping.

And then there is Sandy. Sandy took it upon herself to create a Skype support group for my team where anyone who has questions can go to connect with other members.

A great idea – a small thing that’s made a huge difference for everyone.

And let’s not forget Neil. Just last week he was named “Member of the Month” by our company, Carbon Copy Pro, because of his phenomenal results in his business lately.

Results he has achieved by building his business with completely free marketing strategies.

And – this is the best part – Neil is now in the process of planning an article marketing course that he will start teaching to both his own and my downline in about a week or so.

Without charging a dime for it, and all on his own initiative…

There are many more names I could mention. Like my personal assistant Mel who is also a consultant on my team and who always goes way beyond her call of duty.

And she always treats everyone, applicants and members alike, with love and respect.

Or I could mention 25 year old Rebekka who promptly put together some slides to supplement for some information that was missing in a video tutorial the members had been given access to – and then gave my whole team access to the slides.

Yet another angel…

What I’ve always aimed to do as a leader, is to create a kind of environment among my members that fosters support…a “team spirit”, if you like. Camaraderie.

I’d like to think that my members’ efforts are a reflection of the values that I myself adhere to. I do believe that a leader is known by the actions of their followers – both for good and for bad.

Which is why, when I see my members contributing and going the extra mile for one another, I feel that I have, in fact, accomplished something worthwhile.

If you want to know what it is that gets my juices flowing, well, there you have it…what has me jumping out of bed in the morning…every morning, still, after over four years in the direct sales industry.

It’s not the money. It’s not the recognition. It’s not the lifestyle.

Even though all of that of course is fabulous, what it is really about is the people. The relationships. The changed lives.

Seeing the angels emerge in your downline, knowing that you had at least some small part in their formation.

That, I am convinced, has got to be the most gratifying feeling for any person in network marketing.

Miracles Still Happen (True Story)

Wednesday, October 20th, 2010

It truly is amazing how “lucky” one can be sometimes.

This weekend, while in New York City for a business meeting, I had a string of small miracles happen.

First I lost my camera. Then I lost my wallet. Finally, I lost my necklace pendant. Incredibly, my belongings have all since been found and returned to me. Or, as in the case with the camera, my old one was miraculously replaced with a brand new model the same day I lost it.

But let me start from the beginning. And, by the way, all this really happened – every detail of the story.

Camera Lost

It was Saturday night, and I was heading out to meet a friend briefly before getting together with a group of people for dinner.

But as I sat down for dinner, I noticed that my camera was missing. And although I searched high and low for it, it was nowhere to be found. And none of the others had seen it.

I was now starting to doubt whether I had even brought it with me. I knew I intended to…but perhaps, in the rush of getting ready, I had left it behind. I wasn’t sure.

I hoped I would find the camera in my hotel room when I returned, but I was disappointed: It was not there.

Sadly, I concluded that I must have left it in the cab that I took down to the restaurant earlier that evening.

Fast forward to the next morning: I didn’t receive the wake-up call that I ordered, and so I overslept. And once again I was in a big hurry as I tossed my things into the suitcase and checked out of the hotel to grab a ride to the airport.

Who Took My Wallet?

When I got to Newark airport and reached for my wallet to pay the taxi driver, the wallet was not in my purse.

I could feel the hair stand up on the back of my neck: I had seen it in there the night before, and I knew I hadn’t removed it. But I also didn’t think it could have been stolen as I had not let my purse out of sight even for a minute.

Fortunately, I found one of my credit cards loose in my purse, which I used to pay the driver.

Once inside the terminal, I turned my luggage inside out, but the wallet was nowhere to be seen.

I could have screamed! My Green Card was in that wallet, and losing your Green Card, well, that’s no small matter.

It’s like losing your passport… Getting a new one is not easy. Or cheap. And of course, the fact that I didn’t know whose hands it had fallen into and whether I would soon find myself being a victim of identity theft, was disturbing.

“By The Way, We Found Your Gold Jewelery”

I prayed silently for favor as I called the hotel in NYC where I had been staying. Perhaps, by some small miracle, I had left my wallet in the hotel room during the hustle and bustle of packing and checking out that morning.

But no – there was no wallet there, the hotel staff announced after inspecting the room.

However, they did find something else! They found a gold necklace pendant! From their description of it, I instantly recognized it to be the very piece of jewelry that my husband had gotten for me as a very special gift just a few weeks prior.

And by sheer accident it was found. I shook my head in disbelief — both at my own recklessness and my good fortune.

I continued my prayers as I headed for security. Without my Green Card I had no form of picture ID, and whether I’d be able to get on the plane and get back home to LA, well, it stood and fell on the good will of the officer at the gate.

After I’d explained to her what happened, after some deliberation, the officer finally – reluctantly – let me through the gate on my credit card that I had in my possession, which had my photo on it. She made sure I understood that, “this is not an official government ID.”

The Package On The Kitchen Table

Needless to say, my agony over losing both my camera, my wallet, and my necklace pendant in the time span of a just few hours, was great.

And I still could not for the life of me fathom what could have happened to my wallet. Could a pickpocket have snatched it? I strongly doubted it. I’d held my purse tight against my body all night.

Fortunately though, this story has a happy ending.

The first incredible thing that happened was that several hours later, the moment I walked in the door at home in LA, I noticed a small package sitting on the kitchen table. And in the package, as it turned out, was a camera, almost identical to the one I had lost – only this one was brand new.

The camera was part of a bigger prize I had won in a sales contest conducted by my company the month before. A prize I had forgotten about completely…until now.

I was amazed.

And the story gets even better.

My husband and I had just hung up the phone after calling each and every one of our credit card companies, asking them to block our accounts…it can’t have been more than five minutes later…when my cell phone rang.

An Unexpected Phone Call From 3,000 Miles Away

The call was from a young woman in New York City who had – get this – happened upon my wallet in a New York taxi cab in Manhattan the night before! In the wallet she had found the number for my friend in NYC who I’d spent some time with that night.

And when the girl called my friend in an attempt to track me down, my friend gave her my contact information.

And so it happened that I received that very unexpected phone call from a complete stranger on the other side of the country who, incredibly, had my treasured wallet in her possession.

“I’ll send it to you,” she said, jotting down my address. “And how can I best reimburse you?”, I asked, as I tried to pick up my jaw from the floor.

“Well, um, my friend and I were kind of drunk last night and we charged our cab fare on your card…$18…so let’s just say we’re even…”

And that, of course, I couldn’t really object to.

The Moral of the Story

So what’s the moral of the story here?

Pay attention to what you’re doing? Don’t be in a rush?

Never cease praying?

What goes around comes around? When you yourself make it a point to do the right thing, good things have a way of finding their way back to you?

I think, all of the above.

But more than anything, I think the moral of the story is this: Never give up hope. Never accept defeat. Be an optimist. At all times, keep a smile on your face and a glow in your eyes. Because truly anything can happen.

Miracles still happen.

If you can lose your camera, your wallet and your necklace in three completely different locations within the time span of just a few hours, and get them all back by “accident”…then, miracles do happen.

Okay, I know, I didn’t actually get my camera back – it was a different one. But what are the odds…I mean the timing of it? The new camera sitting there, waiting for me, as I walked in the door? The same look, same size, same pixels? Think about it…

Choose to believe. Choose to hope. Much of the time it is all you need to keep moving forward.

Out of the Box (How I Achieved the “Impossible”, And How YOU Can, Too!)

Tuesday, October 12th, 2010

Are you brave enough to think outside the box? I hope you are.

Because it is the only way that you will ever achieve anything worthwhile in life.

Only then will you be able to see your wildest dreams come true.

Only then will you be able to live without fear or worry.

Only then will you be able to make a positive difference in the lives of other people.

I created the video above to make a statement…

The statement is “You can.”

I challenge you to rid yourself of limiting beliefs and step out of the box.

Because life inside the box is no life at all.
