Feeling discouraged lately? Why your trials aren’t really trials…but rather triumphs of hope

Tuesday, May 15th, 2012

Feeling discouraged? Mentally and physically exhausted? Like you just want to throw in the towel on your business (or on life) and give up?

Don’t. Don’t give up. Rather let me see if I can help you think of your challenges in terms of opportunities:

1.) Realize that you’ll be able to use your difficult experiences to help others. In fact, the only way we can fully understand the challenges others are facing and therefore also help them find their way through it all, is if we know those challenges first hand!

I love the way the Bible addresses this issue, “…so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.” (2. Cor. 1:4)

2.) When success comes (whatever “success” means to you), the only way you’ll be able to fully appreciate it, is if you also know what it’s like on the other side of the fence.

If all we know is abundance and happiness, then abundance and happiness becomes meaningless, right? You can’t know “good” without also knowing “bad”, or “happy” without knowing “sad”…

3.) Our characters are better molded when times are hard than they are in times of prosperity. If you’re anything like me, you want to develop character so that you can truly influence the people in your life in a positive way.

You’re not here just to “take up space”, you’re here to leave your mark on the world – right? Well, in that case, there’s no getting around the trials…

Finally – and at the risk of sounding a bit cynical – let me speak strictly from a business perspective:

4.) Even with your trials you’re creating your story. Marketing is all about story-telling, and your story is what is going to help your prospects relate to you. A story without “failure” prior to “success” is not a real story that others can relate to – it’s a feel-good fantasy.

If you look at it this way, “failure” is actually good for business! It makes you real, relatable and believable in the eyes of your business contacts and future customers.

And remember, everyone loves a ‘come-back’ or a ‘rag-to-riches’ story: The fact that you were down in the dumps only makes your rise to the top – or back to the top – all that more compelling.

Hope that helped put some back in your heart! Whatever you do, never, ever, ever give up…because you were created for greatness! :)

What to do if your sponsor is a “jerk” ;-)

Tuesday, May 8th, 2012

Well, one option is to throw a pity party. You can crawl up into a corner and cry “boo-hoo, not fair!” when your upline doesn’t give you the attention you feel you deserve.

And, in fact, a lot of people do. After one too many “rejections” they give up, blaming their lack of results on their sponsor (or on the company, compensation plan, system – you name it), and move on to the next shiny object. Where, of course, the process repeats itself.

This is not the case with up-and-coming leaders. They actively go looking for solutions. They understand that their upline has a lot on their plate, too, and that ongoing one-on-one coaching wasn’t necessarily part of the deal.

They don’t have an entitlement attitude, thinking that their sponsor “owes” them something. What’s more, they understand it is to their advantage to learn to be resourceful and to leverage tools both online and offline to provide them with the information they require to succeed.

Does this involve a bit more work than it does to pick up the phone and call your upline? Sure it does. But it is a much, much better way to learn the ropes of marketing. Become INdependent, not sponsor dependent!

With this in mind, here are six different ways to get your burning questions answered when your sponsor “fails” to make themselves available to you.

1.) Google your question. Google has a quadrillion resources available for free – and it is right there at your finger tips! A lot of the time you will find online forums where people are asking – and ANSWERING – the exact question you have! I can’t tell you how many times this has happened to me…!

Tip: Google your question with quotation marks (” “) to get the most relevant search results, i.e. “how do I hyper link a word” rather than how do I hyperlink a word.

2.) You can also do a search on YouTube.com by typing in your topic or question in the YouTube search bar. There, you’ll find loads of useful video tutorials uploaded by YouTube’s own users that demonstrate, step by step, how to do pretty much anything you’d ever need to know about building a home business online.

3.) Post your question on Facebook in your status update. (“Hey, FB peeps, can anyone recommend a great course on Article Marketing?”)

4.) Use the forum in BetterNetworker.com to browse topics posted by other network marketers and to post your own questions that you need help with. Before long, I bet you someone will reach out to you!

(If no one does, try posting your question again – or use one of the other five suggestions listed here to get help! You get the idea: Never sit around and wait, always be proactive, and always be taking action.)

5.) Use the live Skype support group in My Lead System PRO (MLSP). MLSP is a community made up of network marketers from across the industry, and in the MLSP Skype group you can get help from other, more experienced networkers.

(Just don’t forget to reciprocate! How about leaving the person that helped you a nice comment on their blog or Facebook wall where others can see it? That will make them look good…and feel good, too!)

6.) Utilize the connections you have established with other networkers, inside our outside of your own company.

You ARE building relationships with other network marketers, right? You ARE attending live events, exchanging business cards and connecting with other like minded individuals…?

I sure hope so! You need other people – and they need you! (So again, don’t just be a “taker”, be a giver, too!)

So there you have it. As you can see, there’s no need to despair. There’s always a way to get your questions answered. And remember, even if your upline truly is a jerk and doesn’t deserve to have a gem like you on their team, if you are destined for success, nothing and no one can stop you.

Actually, let me correct myself: No one can stop you but YOU….

Why we love MLM… (MLM and the ‘pyramid objection’)

Monday, May 7th, 2012

Ever get the “pyramid” objection from a prospect that you talk to about your MLM?

Well, next time someone tells you you’re involved with a “pyramid scheme”, you may want to point out the following to them:

In MLM, although money “moves up” in the sense that everyone is earning on the work of the person “below” them, the investment of one’s time and energy goes at least as much “from the top down” as it does “from the bottom up”…

You earn residuals on your consultant’s work but you were the one that coached, mentored, and inspired them to make those sales in the first place! Unlike in some corporate entities out there (!), MLM is a two-way street.

And that, in my opinion, is exactly why MLM is so rewarding! You work together. You’re a team. You get results together.

When a person in your downline succeeds, it puts a big smile on your face, doesn’t it? Their hard work is finally paying off…and your hard work is paying off!

Because you’re the one who invested yourself in that person!

It’s only right then, that you should both reap financial rewards as a result!

You may remember a movie from a few years back titled “Pay It Forward”. In this film Haley Joel Osment’s character lectures the adults on the power of good deeds; on how good deeds would spread like wildfire if one person would help only 3 people who again help 3 people, who help 3…

I don’t know about you but when I see this photo from the movie, it’s like looking at the MLM business model! It looks like Haley Joel Osment is conducting a lecture on MLM!

MLM is all about paying it forward. It’s about helping people, who again help others, who help others…

What a lot of the naysayers don’t get is that you’ll never see lasting results in your business if you aren’t genuinely out to help others.

Sure, you may enjoy some short-term accolades, even financial profits, but if you think you can build a strong, loyal team of men and women that respects you, follows you and duplicates your results (your residuals depend on it) and at the same time not take a true interest in their success, you’ll be sorely disappointed.

You and I both know this. The dream stealers, of course, don’t.

So, my friend, next time you get the “pyramid objection”, you may want to tell that to your skeptical prospect!

OR…there’s always the other option: Shake the dust off your feet and move on. Go find someone who’s got the right mindset, the belief and the vision and who’s actually qualified to work with you.

Money making advice from my multi-millionaire mentor

Monday, April 23rd, 2012

Setting goals is extremely important, this you already know. You’re probably already setting goals and working towards them. But are you writing down your goals and reviewing them every single day?

And are you allowing your subconscious to provide you with the plan you need to accomplish those goals? Or are you relying on logic and reasoning for the answers?

I was recently at a conference where one of the speakers talked abouot goal setting. This presenter, a self made multi-millionaire barely 30 years old, shared his own journey to success and the ups and downs he has experienced in his business since then.

“Those times,” he said, “where wealth has come effortlessly, where there has been practically no resistance, where I’ve just SOARED…those have been times where I’ve been crystal clear on my goals, down to the exact figures I was going to make in a specific time period, the number of customers I was going to aqcuire or the reps I was going to bring in.”

“But” he added. “I didn’t try to work it all out in my head how it was going to happen. I wasn’t being all analytical about it.”

“See, I believe that as human beings we already have the answers…our subconscious holds the answers. And when we find ourselves in the situation where we need the solution, the solution will present itself.”

He continued: “Whenever I’ve operated this way, I haven’t just met my goals, I’ve exceeded them…”

“But’, he said, “One thing is for certain. You have to know exactly where you are going to be in 90 days from now…6 months, 12 months… And anything that does not perfectly align itself with that vision and therefore does not belong in that future plan – any project, task or “opportunity” that calls for your attention – is brutally eliminated. Because it is nothing but a distraction.”

He added: “Success as an entrepreneur is a result of pushing through barriers, moving outside your comfort zone…doing something different so that you can achieve different results…doing that which doesn’t come naturally to you.”

He concluded: “Which is why you’ll never get to where you want to be by being who you are today.”

Hmmm, interesting isn’t it?

I don’t know about you but I’ve made it a habit to listen carefully when someone more accomplished than me gives advice!

And I’ve noticed how extremely successful people always seem to have this one thing in common: They keep a journal (or several!) where they jot down their thoughts and ideas…and, of course, their goals.

This is no coincidence. Successful individuals live their lives with determination and purpose. They have a plan. Yet – according to this speaker – when it all comes down to it, they trust their intuition.

They don’t rely only on logic and reasoning, and they don’t allow the fact that they “don’t know everything” keep them from taking action with what they DO know.

If this highly successful entrepreneur (who also happens to be a mentor of mine) is right, it means we need to come more out of our shells, be wiling to take calculated risks…and also, we need to learn to become better at trusting the process.

I don’t know what you are going to do with this information, but I can tell you that I personally – since I heard this presentation recently – have recommmited to consistent goal setting and journaling.

Will you join me in this radical pursuit of excellence?

I hope you will.

Are you living life deliberately or by default? (Lessons learned aboard a Boeing 787)

Wednesday, April 18th, 2012

Do you know what one of the biggest differences between successful people and those that seem to always be “trying” but never accomplish much?

One of the most important differences is that whereas accomplished individuals create a plan and follow it, the “average” person lives life “by default”.

Let me elaborate by means of a real-life scenario that should be familiar to all of us. This struck me today as I was seated aboard an aircraft on my way from Houston, TX back home to L.A.

Having just attended an event in Costa Rica, I was in an even more reflective mood that usual. I looked around at the passengers, observing their activities, and I noticed that they fell into five main categories. They were either –

1) Napping,
2) Staring blankly into space,
3) Watching a movie,
4) Reading a novel, newspaper or gossip magazine…OR
5) Playing with their phones or other electronic devices.

Now please understand that I’m not here to pass judgement, merely to point out what I observed and the lesson I think it holds. There are obviously times that we all deserve to take a nap in the middle of the afternoon or relax with a good movie or an entertaining magazine!

Still, I think there’s a lot to learn about human nature from studying people in a passive situation (such as passengers aboard a plane), a situation where they don’t have to physically be anywhere, don’t have a clock to punch or a deadline to meet.

Simply put, they can’t do much else but wait.

Or CAN they?

There is one thing in life you are never ever going to get back once you lose it, and that’s TIME. Of course, once the hours and minutes are gone, you’ll never be able to retrieve them. Which is why I think we can safely say that time is our most precious commodity.

We all know this at a subconscious level. The difference is that the accomplished person, because they’ve also come to realize this at a conscious level, lives accordingly. They live deliberately…purposefully…NOT by default.

The natural thing to do – the thing that comes easy to us – is to just go with whatever we feel like at any given moment. When we’re hungry, we eat. When we’re tired, we take a nap. If we feel like watching a movie, we watch a movie…

This is all reactive. It requires no effort whatsoever. It’s passive living, and it’s how the vast, vast majority of people lead their lives.

They merely react to their circumstances.

The succesful person on the other hand, CREATES their own circumstances. He or she boards the plane with expectation of getting something accomplished: To them, a four hour flight from Houston to L.A. is the perfect opportunity to work on a project saved on their laptop or to get some new, creative ideas down on paper…

They are PROactive.

That’s the big difference between successful people and those that never seem to get anywhere in life.

Not to get all dark and gloomy here, but life is short and time is rarely on our side…we all know this.

And this is exactly why you need to have a plan. You need to know where you’re going so that you can get yourself to your desired destination during your allotted time on planet Earth.

With a good plan, faith and persistence, truly any obstacle can be overcome. What at first seemed impossible becomes not only possible but probable – because you made a conscious decision to take that vehicle off auto-pilot and grab the steering wheel with both hands.

That, while the rest of the world sits there dreaming about what could have been…

Do you have to be attractive to succeed with Attraction Marketing? (The answer may surprise you)

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012

Well, what do you think – do you have to be attractive to succeed with Attraction Marketing?

I’m not talking about looks here (haha), so no worries. I’m talking about having an attractive personality – that’s the type of attractiveness I referring to. And, indeed, the answer to my question is a big, loud resounding “yes”.

People relate to other people, not to product lines, companies or opportunities. Which is why, as a network marketer, you need to be personal in your approach.

Meaning…? Meaning you have a personal blog, a personalized sales funnel, a social media presence, and content like articles and videos published in your name…for starters.

Everything you do should be approached from a problem-solution perspective: Your prospect has a problem and you are there to help them solve it.

This obviously becomes easier over time as you acquire more and more knowledge. This newfound knowledge will also help you build confidence which makes it easier to function in the role as a leader.

Because that’s really what you are doing…you’re being a leader. You are guiding, teaching and serving – an important part of what leaders do.

Everyone’s looking for a leader to follow – that includes your prospects.

If they don’t follow you, your prospect will follow someone else (which you don’t want, obviously). So make sure you put on your leader hat and continue to raise the bar on yourself in that area.

Also, keep in mind that we tend to attract people that are “just like us” so if you want to bring the right people – quality people – into your MLM business, you’ve got to strive to be that person you’d like to sponsor.

This is where attractiveness enters the picture.

And what are some characteristics of an attractive person, some may ask? Okay, let’s run through a few…

You have amazing work ethics, you’re generous, giving, confident, strong, forward-thinking, productive, efficient, driven, self-disciplined, self-motivated, at peace with yourself and your circumstances, you’re an overcomer and an optimist…

You’re not afraid to speak up, you’re action oriented, you take educated risks, you strive to be the best that you can be at what you do, you seek to inspire and encourage others…

Quite a list, eh? And I’ve really only touched the tip of the iceberg here.

Personal growth – or growing an attractive personality, as I like to call it – is obviously a lifelong pursuit. But it is a worthy pursuit and one that we all need to commit to.(And sometimes re-commit to when we slack off!)

Personal development is a big deal in the MLM/home business industry, and that’s for good reason.

There is simply no way you’ll survive the ups and downs of entrepreneurship, stay the course and – which is what I’ve been focusing on in this particular post – attract prospects into your business if you don’t possess attractive personality traits.

On the flipside, when your prospects truly come to see you as that person they themselves would love to be like (and this really is the key here…you are their role model!) – someone who’s self-assured, successful, accomplished, yet relatable and personal in their approach – how can they not want to come sit at your feet to learn from you?

Who wouldn’t be attracted to this type of person, right?

By becoming the leader your prospects are looking for, you will rise above your competition – all the people who don’t think outside the box and who are hiding behind replicated MLM company sites and impersonal systems.

By putting a “face” on your business this way, you’ll be light-years ahead of your competitors from the outset.

Your prospect will know exactly who they’re dealing with. Your transparency will shine through and you’ll build trust and credibility quickly and effortlessly. Which, of course, is essential to getting your prospects to buy from you as people buy from those that they know, like and trust.

In a world flooded with offers and opportunities, you will be the obvious choice.

You will be the obvious choice because you’re so darn awesome.

That, my friend, is what Attraction Marketing is all about.

Okay, so you’ve given value…now what? (How to actually make money with Attraction Marketing)

Friday, March 23rd, 2012

Many people who use Attraction Marketing in their businesses mistakenly believe that all they have to do is give value, and the money will come. Well, it starts with giving value but that’s not all there is to it.

Giving value will help you attract followers. But, the entire purpose of attracting those people is to give you an opportunity to sell to them! Right?

You only make money when you do one single thing – namely take an order. Which means that at least 80% of your time should be spent on calls with people, taking orders.

Or – the other option, and the one that I personally prefer – it should be spent working on ways to get the order-taking to happen on your website, on autopilot.

Whether you find option A or B to be the most effective will depend on the nature of your products. It also depends on how you prefer to work your business and on whether you are just starting out or you’ve been marketing for a while.

Expect to have to make more phone calls in the beginning. (You still should have some sort of qualification process that your prospects have to go through before they get to talk to you and not just call leads blindly.)

Your auto responder emails should be doing the same – they should be giving value, but you should also be asking for the sale. If not in every single message, certainly in the vast majority of them.

People WANT to be led. And part of leading is telling them what to do next: apply, purchase the start up kit, take a test drive or whatever the case may be.

This is also why you must always give your prospect a clear, concise step of action, something specific to do next. And don’t give them several options – this will only confuse them and they will choose none. No, give them only ONE option.

Another thing: Never let your prospects drill you about your business. Remember, in any conversation it is the person who asks the questions who holds the power, and you want to make sure that you maintain posture and stay in control, not your prospect!

So, then, how do your prospects get their questions answered if you don’t take it upon yourself to get on the phone and deal with them?

Well, your sales funnel should be doing the work for you, taking care of as much of the selling and telling as possible: Your websites, emails, videos, tutorials and so on should be doing this on your behalf, all while sorting and filtering your prospects for you.

If your company doesn’t have a call center with trained people who answer questions from interested prospects, consider hiring a part-time freelancer from Odesk (quite inexpensive) that you can train to answer phone calls and call leads back.

It should be well worth the investment: You’ll gain so much posture in the eyes of your prospects this way. How can they not see you as a successful leader if you’ve got your very own personal assistant?

Also, with this strategy, never again will you be left tongue-tied trying to answer a question you don’t know the answer to.

But at the same time your prospects will have a number they can call if they have questions about getting started. You’re not shutting yourself off from them, you’re making yourself accessible, it’s just that you’re making use of hired help – which, I may add, all successful, productive people do.

Have this phone number easily visible on all websites, on your YouTube channel, in your auto responders etc. I recommend you also include the Skype or other messenger ID for your “assistant” in all your correspondence.

Even if you don’t start getting a lot of calls from leads, it helps build trust with the person who’s following you when they see that there’s a number they can call if they need help.

Follow these tips so as to keep an authorative role with your prospects while at the same time staying approachable, and I’m convinced you’ll soon see those leads convert to sales!

Are you ready to fly? (A poem…sort of)

Thursday, March 1st, 2012

If you’ve made up your mind that you can’t do it, I can’t help you.

If you don’t see the value in what I’ve got, I’m not going to try to convince you.

If you’ve determined to stay within your comfort zone where you’re safe and secure and where tomorrow is sure to be as predictable as today…far be it from me to insist that my way is better.

BUT –

If you’re fed up with “average” and “mediocre”.

If you know in your heart that you were meant for something more.

If you believe that every day counts and should be lived as if there was no tomorrow.

If you are willing to DO what it takes to become better…bigger…braver…

And all you need is that little ‘NUDGE’ from someone in order to get out of your nest, spread your wings and fly…

Then, I can help you. And I will show you. And I will nudge you.

But it will still be YOU that flies…

How to stop being a “rookie” and finally make sales in your MLM!

Tuesday, February 21st, 2012

How do you attract people into your home business or MLM when you aren’t yet “successful”? If it’s true – and it is – that success in MLM is all about being the Leader that your prospects are looking for, how do you get them to see you as that Leader while you’re still brand new?

I mean, it’s easy when you got the results…when you’ve got the awards and the screenshots of checks and wire transfers, when you’ve got thousands of followers on Facebook and subscribers on YouTube…but before you get to that point…?

This is often the big “catch-22″ for new distributors: They’ve got to “have results” in order to be able to sponsor people, but at the same time they need to sponsor people to get results in the first place! So what’s poor rookie to do?

Okay, first of all, stop using the word “rookie” (or “newbie”). Remove it, kill it…abolish it from your vocabulary forever. Put a rubber band around your wrist and snap yourself (hard) if you ever use that word about yourself again (or phrases like “if I make money”, “I can’t afford it”, and the likes).

That will remind you to stop demoting yourself and subconsciously programming yourself to believe you aren’t good enough to be a Leader.

So, now that we’re past that hurdle, here’s what you do…three things:

1.) Start building your own brand from Day One. Your internet presence (your blog, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, Facebook etc) should be promoting “You the Leader”, NOT your MLM company.

Using your company logo as Facebook avatar, making your Facebook fan page about your company or your products, using the name of your MLM in your email address (i.e. XYZcompanyrocks@gmail.com) – all of that, it’s like carrying a billboard around that reads, “Amateur”.

No. You should be building You Inc. You are your business. You are the Leader.

2.) Commit to excellence. Study your craft. Become ridiculously good at marketing. This is a life long pursuit, and if you truly want to master it, you’ve got to live it, eat it and breathe it ’till you’re obsessed with it.

3.) Take on a role of leadership whenever you interact with your prospects – be it on the phone, in an email, on Facebook or wherever. That you can only do effectively if you’ve got points 1 and 2 down: your internet presence must be personal, not replicated, and you must have something of value to offer your prospect.

You don’t need to know a LOT (yet) but you’ve got to know more than your prospect! You need to have some solution that they have yet to discover. This automatically puts you in a position of authority – you become the advisor, the person they go to for advice.

These three points outline in very simple terms how you look “successful” before you have tangible results. This is exactly what I did when I was brand new in the industry and had yet to make my first sale.

1.) I never promoted my MLM directly. I was always very conscious about building my brand – not my company’s brand. This made me look “strong”, “confident” and “leader like” in the eyes of my prospect.

2.) I applied myself to my craft. I was committed to becoming great at what I do. To my prospects, I looked like a true expert and therefore an authority – even if, in the beginning, I only knew a little more than they did.

3.) I put on my leadership hat whenever I interacted with prospects. And because my internet presence spoke of uniqueness, expertise and transparency, and because I “knew stuff” and was actually in a position to help others, this wasn’t difficult at all.

Guess what happened…? My contacts started paying attention when I gave “recommendations”…when I gave them direction on what to do and what action steps to take, they listened. Because they trusted me, liked me, and respected me.

This is how I started getting leads and customers…and before long, real results. The snowball was rolling. Slowly at first, then faster and faster. And – get this – before I knew it I had the coveted pictures of awards and screenshots of checks and wire transfers…!

That’s “all” there is to achieving success in MLM. In an industry where everyone is just out to “get”, and where people are starved for leadership, seek to offer value and solutions, to give rather than take, and to step up to the plate and be a person of authority.

“You can get everything in life you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want”. This famous Zig Ziglar quote, in the context of what I just shared in this post, becomes not only a possibility but a certainty.
