13 years ago today, Sam and I said “I do”

Monday, January 17th, 2011

Today Sam and I have been married for 13 years. Wow! It seems like it was just yesterday that this handsome young driving instructor showed up at my doorstep…

Yep, that’s how we met: I had just moved to Los Angeles – a city built for cars, I learned quickly – and getting my drivers license became top priority.

Sam was the instructor I hired to teach me…he was just a name I got off of the yellow pages. I, of course, had no idea of the ripple effect that one seemingly small, insignificant decision would create.

That was in November of 1996. Fourteen months later, on January 17, 1998, we were married. We had no money. But we had faith & hope…and we were madly in love.

Interestingly, Sam and I were baptized together just a week before our wedding. And after I had shared my Christian testimony in front of the congregation about how Sam and I met, and how he’d started witnessing to me while we were out driving, the response from the pastor was as follows:

“How about that? Driver’s license, marriage and salvation in the same package!”

The congregation erupted in laughter.

Yes, that’s the story in a nutshell. And today, 13 years later, I have this to say to my wonderful hubby:

Thank you for all that you do. Thank you for letting me live out my dreams. Thank you for standing behind me, believing in me, cheering me on.

I may be the “face” of our business, but one must not forget that behind every successful woman stands a great man. You are that man. I love you heaps.

Internet marketing, faith and “the man with the golden voice”

Saturday, January 8th, 2011

By now I’m sure you’ve heard the story of Ted Williams, the 53 year old homeless man who within 72 hours went from panhandling and living on the streets of Ohio to becoming a media sensation.

A former radio announcer who had lost everything to a drug and alcohol addiction – but now clean and with a new-found faith in God – he had been praying relentlessly that his 90 year old mother would live to see his comeback.

And just the other day, while wandering the streets of Ohio begging for spare change, he was discovered by a reporter. This reporter shot a video of “the Man with the Golden Voice”, a video that soon went viral online and catapulted Ted into the spotlight.

Ted has now been reunited with his mother, whom he hadn’t seen in 20 years (!)…and the job offers are pouring in.

It’s an amazing story… I haven’t been able to get it off my mind since I first heard it earlier this week.

It’s a story that gives you hope. And that’s why I wanted to briefly comment on it here on my blog.

Three things I take away from it:

1. Anything can happen when you just choose to stay positive, prayerful and continue to believe…yes, even in the worst of circumstances.

2. God is a God of second chances: You can never mess up too bad.

3. The Internet is an incredible tool…a youtube video that goes viral can change a person’s life. As a online marketer, you need never doubt that you are in the right place at the right time.

Let 2011 be the year that you make an impact on someone, and use your business as the vehicle to accomplish it…

Here is the famous video.

A prayer

Monday, May 10th, 2010

Lord, teach me -

Not to pursue honor for honor’s own sake or I will have received my reward in full

(and I would rather be esteemed by You)

To strive for greatness yet remain humble, to attain wisdom yet never think I know it all

To pour myself into others yet never run empty, to live life with passion yet find true joy in You alone

And above all this, and because of this, to always strive to love You more

This, Lord, is my prayer…

Let us not labor in vain…

Sunday, May 2nd, 2010

One of my favorite scriptures in the Bible is Psalm 127; 1-2:

“Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchmen stand watch in vain. In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat – for He grants sleep to those He loves.”

Many, many times have those words convicted me…convicted me of my tendency to rely on myself instead of God. The fact that I so often seem to forget God is really the one at work…with the result that I don’t allow myself to rest in Him. Which really means I’m not trusting Him.

Now, of course it is God’s desire that we commit to excellence in everything we do; that we work not unto men but as unto the Lord.

But at the same time, He wants us to have balance in our lives. Because if we lack balance, we are not healthy, and if we are not healthy – mentally, emotionally, physically, spiritually – how can we be effective ambassadors of His kingdom?

If we are always overworked, tired, stressed, anxious – how will others look at us and say, “I want what they have…”? Then we are no different than the rest of the world, chasing after money, possessions, and recognition, not trusting that God will supply all our needs if we just seek His kingdom first.

And another thing: If we try to do all the work ourselves, not giving God room to move, then we are the ones getting all credit. Then God does not get the glory.

Which brings to mind another passage of scripture that has greatly impacted my life – the 7th chapter of Judges:

Gideon has been given the mandate by God to fight the Midianites to save Israel. But when Gideon gathers his troops to advance on the Midianite camp, God actually tells him to reduce his men (!), first by twenty-two thousand, and eventually to the point where Gideon is left with only 300 men…300 men that God uses to defeat the vast number of Midianite warrriors – just as He promised.

Why did the Lord do this? He did it “in order that Israel may not boast against Me that her own strength has saved her…” (v. 2)

Oh Lord, may You help us, your children, not to become self-sufficient but to remember, always, that it is You working through us. May we not labor in vain! And if You see the need to reduce our numbers, may You do so as you see fit, so that when we are victorious, it is You, not we, that get the glory.

Gratitude

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

I just came back from a walk in my neighborhood here in Burbank, a suburb of Los Angeles.

When I left home, it was with the intent of trying to come up with some ad copy for my new landing page while getting some excersise at the same time. Instead I became so lost in reflection I never even got to think about any marketing.

Instead I thought about the subject of gratitude.

My reflections were triggered by what I saw, heard and smelled all around me: the lush green lawns and the smell of newly cut grass….beautiful flowers in every shade of red, yellow, blue, white and purple. The trees, wow…so many different kinds of trees and bushes, and all of them green and in full blossom.

It’s the end of April, and I just returned to LA after spending 3 weeks in Norway. Spring is particularly late in Norway this year, it seems: it was cold, windy, and everything was just gray. No flowers budding, no leaves on the trees, still batches of snow on the ground, no grass growing, no greenery…

Everything gray, cold, naked, and dead.

Today, having returned home to LA, and being out for a walk in my neighborhood, it was as if I for the first time noticed the beauty of it all…although, in fact, nothing really looked much different than it did the day I left for Europe.

And yet, it was as if I for the first time truly heard the birds, smelled the grass and saw the lushness that surrounded me.

And it dawned on me how blessed I am.

I also realized how often I fail to give thanks…how often I take all the good things in my life for granted.

And I asked God for forgiveness for my lack of gratitude. And I thanked Him. I thanked Him for opening up my senses today to fully appreciate His simple yet profound wonders.

Sometimes you have to experience the absence of something before you truly learn to value its presence.
