A Case Against Daily Affirmations (Not For The Feeble-Minded…Or For Your Upline)

I created this video a while back. As you can see, I’m all for personal empowerment. But daily affirmations shouldn’t be used as a false confidence booster that diverts attention away from the real issue at hand, namely WHY someone is struggling in their business.

Okay, so I have something to say about daily affirmations, and chances are it’s going to rub some people the wrong way. But I’m going to take the chance because this needs to be said.

So allow me to share briefly about my own experience with daily affirmations, and see if perhaps you can relate.

And also, by the end of this post, I want to present to you what I believe to be a better alternative…

Daily Affirmations x5 = Massive Success?

As for me, even as a brand new distributor, I always thought the whole concept was a little silly. I didn’t use daily affirmations at all at first, not for several months.

But as time went on and the mindless dialing and follow-up was starting to take its mental toll on me, I did what everyone else in my team was doing – I started incorporating daily affirmations into my routine.

And it did help to tell myself that I was “an abundantly blessed woman” and that “the lead and cash flow were strong” (even though they were not). It did help build my confidence and belief…at least until the next prospect screamed in my ear and slammed down the phone.

Then the good feelings quickly evaporated and it was back to square one…(meaning, yes exactly, more daily affirmations).

On bleak days like these (and they were many), the advice from my upline was to say my daily affirmations repeatedly out loud – a minimum of five times a day – to “strengthen my belief”.

So I did. We all did it – everyone on the team.

Now, let me ask you a question, and be honest with yourself when you answer:

If you already have sufficient belief, do you need affirmations?

Think about it.

You don’t, do you? You don’t need to try and talk yourself into feeling a certain way if you ALREADY feel that way…!

To use an analogy that will hit home with a lot of the married folks out there -

If you’re completely infatuated with your spouse, you don’t need to go around reminding yourself of how much you love them. The feelings are just there, naturally.

It’s only if your marriage is on the rocks and you’re struggling with anger and bitterness toward your spouse – yet you are trying to work through it – that you have to make a conscious effort to reflect on what’s so great about your partner and why you married them in the first place…correct?

Second question:

Where does belief come from…real belief?

Well, it’s the byproduct of real RESULTS…of experiencing that what you are doing is actually working.

But if you are not getting results, then you’ve got to try and conjure up enough belief before you get on the phone with people. Which is why you turn to daily affirmations.

When your downline is dissolving and after twelve months you aren’t any closer to financial freedom than the day you got started…

When low-quality leads continue to suck your energy and all your credit cards are maxed out, when you are disillusioned and mildly depressed, then you really do need daily affirmations to try to offset all the negativity!

You need a ‘lift’ of some kind, so that you’re actually physically able to drag yourself back to your desk and pick up that 100 lbs phone one more time to dial the next tire kicker.

Getting To The Heart Of The Matter.

Here’s the thing: If you’re experiencing real, tangible results from your efforts, if you’re making a great income and you feel good about yourself, then, you don’t need daily affirmations.

I’ll say it again: You don’t need to try and talk yourself into feeling a certain way if you ALREADY feel that way, naturally.

To say that daily affirmation are the solution for a struggling distributor is like telling a wounded person to use a band aid when surgery is needed.

If you’re having a hard time getting customers and distributors, I suspect it’s not because you aren’t faithfully saying your daily affirmations out loud five times a day but rather because you haven’t been taught how to market properly.

And this is also the answer…this will eliminate the need for daily affirmations all together.

What is the answer? The answer is marketing. It’s marketing that moves products into the hands of paying customers, nothing else.

And professional network marketing, or Attraction Marketing as we also refer to it as, does not involve (are you sitting down?) going prospecting at the mall, cold-calling unresponsive opportunity leads, or passing out product samples to unsuspecting passer-bys outside department stores.

With professional marketing / Attraction Marketing you don’t introduce your products or opportunity to every person that breathes – you only approach folks that are actually looking for what you have to offer.

(If you do it right, a lot of the time they will actually come to you.)

Also, when you know how to market, you’ll pre-sell your prospects on wanting to work with you and buy from you because you’ll build a relationship with them first. You don’t just approach them with a sales pitch – you earn the right to sell to them.

People buy from those that they like, trust and respect. Get your prospects to like, trust and respect you, and the sales will come. Then you will get results. And then you won’t need daily affirmations.

Because with the results, BELIEF will come… That’s right – just like that – completely effortlessly.

I love the video! :D Kinda conflicted with this 1. I do use affirmations but have realized that saying affirmations (while a handy tool) is like holding your hammer & thinking of driving the nail into the wood but not actually swinging it. It’s not going in their by itself.

    • Lena Bjorna says:

Well said, Wyn! And I think it’s okay to be conflicted…it’s not all black and white obviously. My issue is when people don’t see the problems for what they are and think it’s just about “conjuring up enough belief”…

    Hi Lena

Blindly following what others tell you is no way to build a business. If affirmations work for you fine, but in many cases this only causes stress and people drop out of Network Marketing as it is too hard. We need to remember that it is our business and work out a plan that feels right for us. Study what others are doing and take the best that fits you as a person.

Great blog. I know for sure when I start seeing tangible results my belief will rocket. Repeating affirmations on a daily basis will not take me to the same place, as, in my experience, actions speak louder than words.

    Thanks for sharing.

Hi Lena, I am so happy because what you share with me today worth
more than a million dollar and a gold. Something like With professional marketing / Attraction Marketing you don’t introduce your products or opportunity to every person that breathes – you only approach folks that are actually looking for what you have to offer. God richly Blessed you.
